چکیده

Background and Purpose—Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is mostly a disease of the elderly, but most current experimental ICH models have used young animals. Age is an important factor in other forms of brain injury, affecting microglia and astrocyte reactions and plasticity. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of aging on brain injury after ICH. Methods—Young and aged (3 and 18 months old, respectively) male Sprague-Dawley rats received an intracerebral infusion of 100 L autologous blood. Age-related changes in brain swelling, glial reaction, stress protein (heat shock proteins [HSPs] 27 and 32), and neurological deficits were examined. Results—Brain swelling was more severe in old rats compared with young rats at 3 days after ICH (P 0.05). There were also more severe neurological deficits in the older rats at 1 day after ICH, which persisted for the 4 weeks of monitoring (P 0.05). The older rats also had stronger microglial activation and a greater perihematomal induction of HSP-27 and HSP-32 (P 0.05). In contrast, there was a weaker astrocytic reaction to the hematoma. Conclusions—ICH causes more severe brain swelling and neurological deficits in old rats. Clarification of the mechanisms of brain injury after ICH in the aging brain should help develop new therapeutic strategies for hemorrhagic brain injury. (Stroke. 2004;35:2571-2575.)

Brain Edema and Neurologic Deficits in Rat Stroke Model: The Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Salvia Officinalis

Bachground & Objectives: In the brain ischemia, the production of free radicals increases. Salvia is a rich source of antioxidant compounds therefore, in this study we will examine the effects of Salvia extracts on brain edema and score of neurological deficits.  Materials & Methods: In this experimental study, 35 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, each containing 7 rats. Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Brain Edema and Neurological Movement Disorders Following the Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

Introduction: Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion causes physiological and biochemical changes in the neuronal cells that will eventually lead to cell damage. Evidence indicates that exercise reduces the ischemia and reperfusion-induced brain damages in animal models of stroke. In the present study, the effect of exercise preconditioning on brain edema and neurological movement disorders followin...

Effect of pentoxifylline on brain edema in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia

Pervious studies have shown that pentoxifylline (PTX) has beneficial effects in reduction of stroke and brain trauma injuries in experimental animals. However, there is very little and controversial information about the effect of PTX on brain edema in cerebral ischemia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of different doses of PTX on brain edema and neurological m...

بررسی اثر اولتراسوند بر صدمات ایسکمی مغزی در مدل ترومبوآمبولیک سکته مغزی در رت

Background: Ultrasound (US) has been used in neuroprotection after cerebral ischemia however, its use is controversial. Application of US in combination with fibrinolytic agents may improve fibrinolytic effects. In this study the effects of US, alone or in combination with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), on brain ischemic injury were examined and we studied whether US is protective in the b...

Neuroprotective Effects of Allicin on Neurological Scores, Blood Brain Barrier Permeability and Brain Edema Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Male Rats: A Behavioral, Biochemical and Histological Study

Background and purpose: Allicin has a wide range of pharmacological functions, all of which can be demonstrated in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-tumor activities. In this research, we investigated the neuroprotective role of allicin in the process of diffuse traumatic brain injury and its effect on interleukin levels and histological changes in rats. Materials and method...
